Harvest 2021

This video was shot on a Leica Q2 and edited in Adobe Premier Pro. It was taken at my families ranch during 2021 harvest.

I conceptualized this idea in my notebook a few weeks prior to harvest. I thought about interviewing some of the farmers who would be harvesting, but ultimately came to the conclusion to keep it simple. The land would speak for itself and the famous “So God Made a Farmer” voiceover by Paul Harvey along with some moving music would convey the emotional and beautiful season that is harvest.

But before Harvest, there are seasons of equal importance of change and growth for the grapes.

Time for winter pruning. This happens when the grapes are dormant and the vines are feeding off the soil for nutrients.

March is typically when the vines emerge from dormancy. This is known as bud break.

Version is when the grapes are ripening and developing sugars. This usually happens in central California in late summer. Some farmers may prune back to allow for more ripening or the fruit could drop in which case you may see uneven ripening.

HARVEST TIME. Now it is time to pick the grapes. This is done in early August beginning with the white variety because of the warm temperatures in California.
